I Am Learning to Swim

My name is Selin. I am twenty-eight years old. I live in Istanbul. I can ride a bike, cook nice meals, and drive a car. But I cannot swim.

When I am near the sea, I usually sit on the beach. My friends swim and play in the water, but I only watch them.

One day, my friend Derya says, “You should learn to swim.”

“I am afraid of deep water,” I answer.

“You can start in a swimming pool,” she says. “You don’t have to swim in the sea.”

I think about her idea. The next day, I call a swimming school. I join a beginner class.

On Saturday morning, I go to the pool. I have got a swimsuit, a towel, a swimming cap, and goggles.

Our teacher’s name is Sibel. She is friendly and patient.

“First, you must take a shower,” she says. “You must wear your swimming cap. You mustn’t run near the pool because the floor is wet.”

There are six people in the class. We are all beginners.

First, we sit near the pool and put our feet in the water. Then we go into the small pool.

“You can hold the side,” Sibel says. “You don’t have to be afraid.”

I hold the side very tightly.

“Can you put your face in the water?” she asks.

“No, I can’t,” I say.

“You should take a deep breath first.”

I try again. This time, I put my face in the water for three seconds.

“Well done!” Sibel says.

In the second lesson, I learn to move my legs. In the third lesson, I can float for a short time.

After one month, I can swim five meters. I am still slow, and I cannot swim in deep water yet. But I feel happy and proud.

Now I understand something important: You don’t have to learn everything quickly. You only have to start and keep trying.

Can / Can’t

Can bir şeyi yapabildiğimizi, can’t ise yapamadığımızı söyler.

• I can ride a bike. → Bisiklete binebilirim.
• I can’t swim. → Yüzemem.

Should

Should, tavsiye verirken kullanılır.

• You should learn to swim. → Yüzmeyi öğrenmelisin.
• You should take a deep breath. → Derin bir nefes almalısın.

Must / Mustn’t

Must, yapılması zorunlu olan şeyleri anlatır.

Mustn’t, yapılmaması gereken şeyleri anlatır.

• You must wear your swimming cap. → Yüzme boneni takmalısın.

Don’t Have To
