THE PHONE IN THE TAXI
On Saturday morning, Deniz takes a taxi to a shopping mall. She wants to buy a birthday present for her sister. The traffic is busy, but the taxi driver is friendly. They talk about the sunny weather during the trip.
When Deniz arrives at the mall, she pays the driver, says goodbye, and walks inside.
About ten minutes later, she wants to call her sister.
She opens her bag.
She checks every pocket.
Her phone is not there.
“Oh no,” she says.
She remembers the taxi.
“My phone is in the taxi!”
Deniz feels worried. She does not know the driver’s name or phone number. She only remembers that the taxi was yellow and very clean.
She goes to the information desk.
A young man smiles.
“Can I help you?”
“Yes, please,” Deniz says. “I left my phone in a taxi.”
“Do you remember anything about the taxi?”
“The driver had a blue cap,” she says. “And there was a small football sticker on the dashboard.”
The young man smiles.
“That helps.”
He calls the local taxi office.
About fifteen minutes later, his phone rings.
“The driver has your phone,” he says.
Deniz cannot believe it.
Twenty minutes later, the same taxi arrives outside the mall.
The driver gets out with a smile.
“I think this is yours.”
“Yes! Thank you so much!” Deniz says happily.
The driver laughs.
“You are lucky. The next passenger saw the phone and gave it to me.”
Deniz thanks both the driver and the young man at the information desk.
Before she leaves, she buys two small boxes of chocolate.
She gives one to the taxi driver.
“This is for you.”
“You don’t have to,” he says.
“I know,” Deniz replies, “but I want to.”
On her way home, Deniz thinks about her day.
She almost lost her phone, but she also met honest and kind people.
Sometimes, one small problem reminds us that good people are everywhere.
