📖 I Think I Saw a Cat

Murat lives on the fourth floor of an old apartment building in Istanbul. The building has no elevator, so he has to climb the stairs every day. He usually complains about it, especially when he is carrying shopping bags.

One Friday evening, Murat comes home after a tiring day. He is hungry and wants to spend a quiet evening at home. Before going upstairs, he stops at a market near his building and buys some snacks: chips, chocolate, cookies, and a bottle of water.

As he leaves the market, he notices something orange moving between two parked cars.

He stops.

“Hmm… I think I saw a cat,” he says to himself.

He waits for a few seconds, but the animal has already disappeared. Murat shrugs and continues walking.

When he reaches his building, he sees that the front door is slightly open. He enters and starts climbing the stairs with his shopping bag. By the third floor, he is already tired.

“Why does this building have four floors and no elevator?” he complains.

Just then, he hears something behind him.

“Meow.”

Murat turns around quickly. There is nothing on the stairs.

He looks down, but the hallway is empty.

“That’s strange,” he thinks.

Finally, Murat reaches his floor, unlocks the door, and goes inside. He leaves the shopping bag on the kitchen floor, changes into comfortable clothes, and throws himself onto the sofa.

A few minutes later, he hears a rustling sound from the kitchen.

Murat looks toward the door. The sound stops.

Then it starts again.

He slowly gets up.

“Please don’t be a mouse,” he whispers.

When he enters the kitchen, he sees his shopping bag moving.

Murat freezes.

Suddenly, a small orange cat jumps out of the bag.

Murat almost drops his phone.

“What?! How did you get in here?”

The cat looks at him calmly and walks toward the snacks.

“Hey! Stay away from those.”

Murat tries to catch it, but the cat runs into the living room. It jumps onto the sofa, knocks a cushion onto the floor, runs under the table, and hides behind a chair.

Murat chases it for several minutes. Soon, he is out of breath.

“I already climbed four floors today. I’m not doing cardio with you too.”

The cat just sits there and starts licking its paw like nothing happened.

At that moment, someone knocks on the door.

Murat opens it and sees one of his neighbors.

“Hi, Murat. Have you seen an orange cat? His name is Tarçın. He escaped when I opened my door.”

Murat slowly turns around.

Tarçın is now lying comfortably in the middle of his sofa.

Murat points at him.

“I think he has already changed his address.”

His neighbor starts laughing.

A few minutes later, she takes Tarçın home.

Before Murat closes the apartment door, he checks the hallway one more time.

Then he checks his shopping bag.

Twice.

And finally, Murat sits down with his snacks and chooses a movie.
