    The Power Went Out

It was a rainy Friday evening in Istanbul. Dark clouds were covering the sky, and strong wind was blowing through the streets. Most people were hurrying home after work because they did not want to get wet.

Murat was driving home from his office. He was listening to the radio while the rain was hitting the windows of his car. Traffic was moving slowly because many drivers were being careful on the wet roads. At the same time, his wife, Elif, was preparing dinner at home. She was cooking tomato soup, and delicious smells were filling the kitchen. Their ten-year-old son, Can, was sitting in the living room. He was doing his homework while his favorite music was playing quietly in the background.

    Everything seemed normal.

Suddenly, there was a loud sound outside. A bright flash of lightning lit up the sky, and a few seconds later, the electricity went out. The whole apartment became dark.

    “Oh no!” Can shouted.

Elif looked around the kitchen. She could not see anything. She was trying to find her phone, but it was difficult in the dark. At the same time, Murat was still driving. The traffic lights were no longer working, and the streets were becoming more crowded. Some drivers were honking because nobody knew whose turn it was to go.

    Murat called Elif.

    “Are you all right?”

    “Yes, we’re fine,” she answered.

“The power went out a minute ago.”

“I’m on my way home. Be careful.”

    “We will.”

After the call, Elif found a flashlight in the kitchen drawer. While she was looking for candles, Can was standing near the window and watching the heavy rain. The whole neighborhood looked different without electricity. Some people were talking outside, while others were using the flashlights on their phones.

A few minutes later, someone knocked on the apartment door.

It was their elderly neighbor, Mrs. Aylin.

“I wanted to check if you were okay,” she said with a smile. “I have some extra candles if you need them.”

“Thank you very much,” Elif replied. “That’s very kind of you.”

While they were talking, Can brought another chair for Mrs. Aylin. Soon, they were sitting together in the living room. Since there was no television or internet, they started chatting instead.

Mrs. Aylin told funny stories about her childhood.

“When I was young,” she said, “power cuts happened much more often. We didn’t have smartphones or tablets. We played games, told stories, and spent time together.”

    Can smiled.

    “That actually sounds fun.”

About twenty minutes later, Murat finally arrived home. He was carrying a small bag from the bakery.

“I thought we might need something sweet,” he said.

Inside the bag were fresh pastries. Everyone laughed happily. They were eating pastries and drinking hot tea while the rain was continuing outside. The apartment felt warm even without electricity.

    Can looked around the room.

“I think this is better than watching TV,” he said.

    His parents smiled.

Just then, the lights suddenly came back on. The television turned on by itself, and the internet router started blinking again.

    “Finally!” Murat said.

But nobody reached for the remote control.

Instead, they continued talking and laughing together for another hour. They realized something important that evening. Sometimes, when technology stops working, people start connecting with each other again.

When Can went to bed that night, he thought about the evening.

The power outage had been unexpected, but it had also given his family something special: time together.

Sometimes, a small problem can create a wonderful memory.

    THE DAY I MET RONALDO

Murat had loved football since he was a child. Every weekend, he watched matches with his father. They talked about their favorite teams, exciting goals, and famous players. But there was one player Murat admired more than anyone else: Cristiano Ronaldo.

For years, Murat had one big dream. He wanted to watch a World Cup match in a real stadium and take a photo with Ronaldo.

Many people told him it was only a dream.

“You’ll probably never meet him,” his friends sometimes said.

    Murat only smiled.

“Maybe. But I’ll never know if I don’t try.”

To make his dream come true, Murat started saving money. He didn’t buy expensive shoes or the newest phone. Whenever he had some extra money, he put it into a small savings box. It took several years, but he never gave up.

When the next World Cup finally arrived, Murat bought a match ticket and booked his flight. He was so excited that he could hardly sleep the night before his trip.

As soon as he arrived in the host country, he could feel the excitement everywhere. The streets were full of football fans wearing different national team shirts. People were singing, waving flags, and taking photos together. Even strangers were talking to each other about football.

On match day, Murat woke up early and put on his Portugal shirt. He checked his ticket three times before leaving the hotel. Then he took the metro to the stadium.

The stadium was even bigger than he had imagined. Thousands of fans were already there. Some were eating, some were buying souvenirs, and others were taking selfies in front of the stadium.

When the players came onto the pitch, everyone stood up and cheered.

“There he is!” Murat said with a huge smile.

For the first time in his life, he was watching Cristiano Ronaldo with his own eyes.

The match was exciting from the first minute. Ronaldo played very well and scored an amazing goal. The crowd went crazy. Murat shouted, clapped, and celebrated with the fans around him. It didn’t matter where they came from. For ninety minutes, everyone felt like one big family.

After the match, many fans waited near the players’ exit. Murat knew the players might leave quickly, but he decided to wait anyway.

About half an hour later, several players came outside to greet the supporters.

    Then something unexpected happened.

Murat couldn’t believe it when Ronaldo started walking toward him.

His heart was beating so fast.

When Ronaldo was only a few steps away, Murat smiled and held up his phone.

“Hi, Cristiano,” he said. “Would it be okay if we took a photo together?”

    Ronaldo smiled.

    “Sure,” he said. “Come here.”

Another fan kindly took the photo for them.

“Thank you so much,” Murat said.

“My pleasure,” Ronaldo replied. “Keep following your dreams.”

On the flight home, Murat looked at the photo again and again. It wasn’t just a picture with his favorite football player. It reminded him that dreams don’t come true overnight. Sometimes they take years, hard work, and patience.

When he got home, he printed the photo and put it on the wall above his desk.

Every time he looked at it, he smiled.

Some dreams really do come true if you never stop believing.

    The Mysterious Key

(A2 Level English Story – Modal Verbs)

Emma was a university student who lived in a small apartment in a quiet town. One rainy Saturday morning, she decided to clean her room. While she was moving an old bookshelf, she found a small wooden box behind it.

The box was covered with dust. Emma opened it carefully and discovered an old silver key inside. There was also a small note.

    The note said:

“This key can open something important. You must use it wisely.”

    Emma was surprised.

“What can this key open?” she wondered.

She looked at the key for a few minutes. It looked very old, but it was still shiny. She thought it might belong to someone in the building.

“I should ask my neighbors,” she said.

First, she visited Mrs. Brown, an elderly woman who lived downstairs.

Mrs. Brown looked at the key and smiled.

“I don’t know where it comes from,” she said. “But you should be careful. Old things can have interesting stories.”

Next, Emma visited Mr. Davis, who lived across the hall.

    He examined the key closely.

“It might open a storage room,” he said. “Or it could belong to an old house. You can try asking the building manager.”

Emma thanked him and went downstairs.

The building manager looked at the key.

“I’ve never seen this before,” he said. “But there is an old locked room in the basement. Nobody has opened it for years.”

    Emma became excited.

“May I try the key?” she asked.

“Yes, you may,” the manager replied.

Together, they walked to the basement. At the end of a dark hallway, there was a large wooden door.

Emma inserted the key into the lock.

    Click.

    The door opened.

Inside, there was a small room filled with old furniture, books, and photographs. Everything was covered with dust.

“There must be a story behind this room,” Emma said.

As they looked around, Emma noticed a framed photograph on the wall. It showed a young man standing in front of the building many years ago.

Under the photo, there was a message:

“If you find this room, you should learn its history.”

    The manager looked surprised.

“I think this was the room of the building’s first owner,” he said.

They spent the afternoon exploring the room. They found letters, newspapers, and many old pictures.

    One letter explained everything.

The first owner loved history and wanted future residents to discover the past. Before he died, he hid the key and left clues for someone to find.

    Emma smiled.

“So this wasn’t treasure,” she said.

“No,” the manager replied. “But it may be something more valuable.”

That evening, Emma shared the story with her neighbors. Everyone was fascinated.

Mrs. Brown said, “We should create a small history corner in the building.”

“That’s a wonderful idea,” Emma said.

Over the next few weeks, the residents worked together. They cleaned the room and organized the old photographs and documents.

People could visit the room and learn about the building’s history.

One day, a local newspaper wrote an article about their project.

    Emma felt proud.

She had found a mysterious key, but she had discovered something even more important: a connection to the past.

As she looked at the old photographs, she thought about the note.

    “You must use it wisely.”

    Now she understood.

The key could open a door, but it could also open people’s curiosity, imagination, and sense of community.

And sometimes, that might be the greatest treasure of all.

    I AM LOST!

Deniz loved nature. One Saturday morning, she decided to go hiking in a forest near her town. The weather was beautiful. The sun was shining, and the birds were singing. Deniz packed a small backpack with water, sandwiches, and her phone. She wanted to spend a few hours in nature and relax.

When Deniz arrived at the forest, she saw a map near the entrance. She looked at it for a few seconds, but she did not study it carefully. She thought, “The trails look easy. I won’t get lost.”

At first, everything was wonderful. Deniz walked along a narrow path and enjoyed the fresh air. She saw colorful flowers, tall trees, and a small stream. She took many photos with her phone. After about an hour, she found a beautiful place and sat down to eat her lunch.

After lunch, Deniz decided to explore a different path. The path looked interesting, so she followed it. Soon, she noticed that the trail became smaller and less clear. However, she continued walking.

About thirty minutes later, Deniz looked around and realized something was wrong. She did not recognize the area. The trees looked the same in every direction. She checked her phone, but there was no signal.

    Suddenly, she felt nervous.

“Where am I?” she asked herself.

She walked for another fifteen minutes, hoping to find the main trail again. But instead, she became more confused. She saw the same large rock twice and knew she was walking in circles.

Deniz stopped and took a deep breath.

“I am lost,” she said quietly.

For a moment, she felt scared. The forest was getting darker because clouds covered the sun. She thought about calling for help, but her phone still had no signal.

Then Deniz remembered something she learned in a hiking video. When you are lost, you should stay calm and avoid walking randomly. She sat down and drank some water. After a few minutes, she felt better.

Deniz listened carefully. In the distance, she heard the sound of running water. She remembered crossing a stream earlier that day. She decided to walk toward the sound.

Slowly and carefully, she followed the noise. After about twenty minutes, she found the stream. She recognized it immediately. She remembered taking photos there in the morning.

Deniz followed the stream because she knew it was close to one of the main trails. Soon, she saw a wooden sign. The sign showed the direction to the forest entrance.

    Deniz smiled with relief.

She followed the signs and continued walking. About forty minutes later, she finally reached the entrance of the forest. A park ranger was standing nearby.

“Are you okay?” the ranger asked.

“Yes,” Deniz replied. “I got lost, but I found my way back.”

The ranger smiled. “That happens sometimes. Next time, study the map carefully and stay on the marked trails.”

    Deniz nodded. “I definitely will.”

When she arrived home that evening, she told her family about her adventure. Everyone was happy that she was safe.

Deniz learned an important lesson that day: nature is beautiful, but it is important to be prepared. And if you ever get lost, stay calm and think carefully.

Sometimes, staying calm is the best way to find your way home.

    I FEEL SICK

Murat is a 26-year-old man. He lives in Istanbul and works in an office. He usually feels healthy and enjoys his daily life. He likes walking, reading books, and spending time with his family.

One Monday morning, Murat woke up feeling very tired. His head hurt, and his throat was sore. He also had a cough.

At first, he did not think it was serious.

“It is probably just a cold,” he thought.

He drank a cup of tea and went to work. However, during the day, he started to feel worse. His body ached, and he felt very weak. He also had a fever.

His coworker noticed that he looked sick.

“Murat, are you okay?” she asked.

    “Not really,” Murat replied.

“I have a headache, a sore throat, and a cough.”

“You should go home and rest,” his coworker said. Murat agreed.

After work, he went home and slept for several hours.

The next morning, he still felt sick. His fever was higher, and his cough was getting worse. He decided to visit a doctor. Murat called a clinic and made an appointment.

In the afternoon, he went to the clinic. When he arrived, he checked in at the reception desk.

    “Good afternoon,” the receptionist said.

    “How can I help you?”

“I have an appointment with the doctor,” Murat answered.

    The receptionist smiled.

“Please take a seat in the waiting room.”

Murat sat down and waited for his turn. A few minutes later, a nurse called his name.

    “Murat Yılmaz?”

    “Yes, that’s me,” Murat replied.

The nurse checked his temperature, blood pressure, and weight.

“Your temperature is a little high,” she said.

Then she showed him to the doctor’s office. The doctor greeted him warmly.

“Hello, Murat. What seems to be the problem today?” she asked.

    Murat explained his symptoms.

“I have a sore throat, a cough, a headache, and a fever. I also feel very tired.”

“How long have you had these symptoms?” the doctor asked.

    “Since yesterday morning,” Murat answered.

The doctor wrote some notes and continued asking questions.

    “Do you have any allergies?”

    “No, I don’t.”

    “Are you taking any medicine?”

    “No, I’m not.”

The doctor examined Murat carefully. She looked at his throat, listened to his lungs, and checked his breathing. After a few minutes, she smiled.

“The good news is that you don’t have anything serious,” she said.

“You have the flu.” Murat felt relieved.

“What should I do?” he asked.

“You should rest, drink plenty of water, and take this medicine,” the doctor explained.

“You should also stay home from work for a few days.”

The doctor gave him a prescription.

“If your symptoms get worse, come back and see me,” she added.

    “Thank you, Doctor,” Murat said.

After leaving the clinic, Murat went to a pharmacy and bought the medicine. He followed the doctor’s advice carefully. He drank warm tea, ate soup, and slept a lot. Every day, he felt a little better.

After five days, his fever disappeared. His cough became weaker, and he had more energy.

A week later, Murat returned to work. He felt healthy again. His coworker smiled when she saw him.

“Welcome back, Murat! How are you feeling now?”

    “Much better,” Murat replied.

“The doctor helped me a lot.”

From that day on, Murat learned an important lesson: when you feel sick, it is important to listen to your body and visit a doctor if necessary.

    Meeting with Friends

Last Sunday, my friends and I planned to meet after a long time. We were all very busy with work and school, so it was difficult to find a free day.

Finally, we decided to meet at a new shopping mall in the city center. I woke up a little late because my alarm did not ring. I quickly got dressed and left the house without having breakfast.

While I was waiting for the bus, I realized that I forgot my wallet at home. I felt stressed and didn’t know what to do. I called my friend Daniel and told him about the problem.

He said, “Don’t worry! I can pay for you today.”

When I arrived at the mall, my friends were already there. They were sitting in a café and laughing. I felt happy when I saw them.

First, we ordered some drinks and talked about our lives. Maria told us about her new job, and Alex shared his travel plans for Italy. After that, we wanted to go bowling.

At first, I didn’t play very well, but later I started to get better. Everyone was cheering for each other. In the end, Maria won the game, and we all clapped for her.

Suddenly, the lights in the mall went out for a few minutes. It was completely dark, and some people were scared. We used our phone flashlights and waited. After a short time, the lights came back. It was a strange but funny experience.

In the evening, we had dinner together at a small restaurant. We shared pizza and pasta, and we talked for hours. Before going home, we promised to meet again soon.

Even though the day started with small problems, it became one of the best days of the month. I learned that good friends can make every situation better.

    My First Flight

Kerem was twenty-two years old, and he had never traveled by plane before. He lived with his family in a small town near Bursa.

One summer morning, he packed his bag for an important trip to Antalya. His cousin was getting married there, and all the family was excited. But Kerem was nervous. Very nervous.

The night before the trip, he watched many videos about airplanes. Some videos helped him, but some made him more afraid. “What if the plane shakes?” he thought. “What if I get lost in the airport?” “What if I open the emergency door by accident?”

His mother laughed when she heard this.

“Kerem,” she said, “People fly every day. Relax.” But Kerem could not relax.

The next morning, he arrived at the airport two hours early. The airport was huge and loud. People walked everywhere with suitcases, coffee cups, and passports. Kerem looked around carefully.

“Okay,” he said quietly. “Don’t panic.”

First, he checked in his suitcase. Then he went through security. When the machine beeped loudly, Kerem froze. A security officer smiled.

“Phone in your pocket?” she asked.

Kerem touched his pocket and turned red.

    “Oh… yes.”

A few minutes later, he finally reached the gate. He bought a sandwich and sat near the window.

Outside, he watched airplanes move slowly like giant birds. Then he heard an announcement: “Flight 247 to Antalya is now boarding.” Kerem’s stomach felt strange. “This is really happening,” he thought. Inside the plane, everything felt smaller than he expected. He found his seat near the window and sat down carefully.

Next to him sat an old woman with curly white hair. “First flight?” she asked immediately. Kerem looked surprised. “Is it obvious?” The woman laughed warmly. “You are holding the seat like it is moving already.” Kerem smiled nervously.

A few minutes later, the plane started moving. Kerem looked out the window with wide eyes. Faster. Faster. Then suddenly the plane lifted into the sky. Kerem’s heart jumped. “Oh wow,” he whispered. The houses below became smaller and smaller. Soon, the city looked like a toy model. Above the clouds, the sky was bright and beautiful. For the first time that day, Kerem relaxed.

    “This is amazing,” he said.

The old woman smiled. “I told you. Flying is magical.”

But thirty minutes later, the plane suddenly shook. Kerem grabbed the seat again.

“What was that?!” he asked quickly.

“Turbulence,” the woman answered calmly. “Very normal.” But then the shaking became stronger for a few seconds.

A baby started crying. Someone dropped a drink. Kerem looked very worried. The old woman opened her bag slowly and gave him a candy.

    “Here,” she said. “This helps.”

Kerem laughed a little. “Candy helps with fear?”

“No,” she answered. “But candy helps you stop thinking too much.”

A few minutes later, the turbulence ended. Kerem looked out the window again. The clouds looked soft like snow. When the plane finally landed in Antalya, everyone clapped quietly.

Kerem smiled proudly. “I did it,” he said. At the airport exit, he turned to thank the old woman. But she was gone. Only the candy paper remained on the seat. Kerem picked it up and smiled. His first flight was scary, strange, and wonderful.

And now, he wanted to fly again
