Wrong Apartment

Emre is twenty-six years old. He lives in Istanbul. One Saturday evening, his friend Kerem invites him to his new apartment.

Kerem sends Emre the address and a short message:

“My building is next to a small bakery. I live on the second floor. Apartment 6.”

Emre buys a cake and takes the bus. It is his first time in this neighborhood.

When he arrives, he sees a bakery. There is a grey building next to it.

“This must be Kerem’s building,” he thinks.

Emre enters the building and walks to the second floor. He finds apartment number 6. The door is a little open.

“Kerem?” Emre calls.

Nobody answers.

Emre opens the door and goes inside.

“Hello! I am here!” he says.

The apartment is quiet. Emre sees some shoes near the door, so he takes off his shoes too. Then he puts the cake on the kitchen table.

“Kerem is probably in the bathroom,” he thinks.

Emre sits on the sofa and looks around. There are pink pillows in the living room and many family photos on the walls.

“This apartment looks very different,” he says.

Suddenly, a small white dog runs into the room and starts barking loudly.

“Hello, little dog,” Emre says. “Are you Kerem’s new dog?”

At that moment, an elderly woman comes out of the bedroom. She sees Emre and screams.

“A thief! Help!” she shouts.

She quickly picks up a broom and holds it in front of her.

“Get out of my house!” she says.

Emre jumps up from the sofa.

“No, no! Please don’t hit me!” he says. “I am not a thief!”

The woman moves closer with the broom.

“Then who are you?” she asks.

“I am Emre. I am Kerem’s friend. He lives in apartment 6.”

“There is no Kerem here!” the woman says.

Emre points at the door.

“But this is apartment 6.”

“Yes, it is,” she answers. “But this is the wrong building!”

Emre looks out of the window. Across the street, he sees another bakery and another grey building.

He understands his mistake.

“Oh no,” he says. “I am very sorry. The buildings look the same.”

The woman looks at the cake on the table.

“Did you bring a cake to steal my television?” she asks.

Emre starts laughing nervously.

“No. The cake is for Kerem.”

The woman lowers the broom and starts laughing too.

Emre quickly takes his cake, puts on his shoes, and leaves.

A few minutes later, he finds the correct building. Kerem is waiting outside.

“Where were you?” Kerem asks.

Emre looks at the cake and says, “I was almost attacked by an old woman with a broom.”

Kerem looks confused.

Emre smiles.

“It is a long story.”

Yanlış Daire

Emre yirmi altı yaşındadır. İstanbul’da yaşamaktadır. Bir cumartesi akşamı arkadaşı Kerem, onu yeni dairesine davet eder.

Kerem, Emre’ye adresi ve kısa bir mesaj gönderir:

“Binam küçük bir fırının yanında. İkinci katta, 6 numaralı dairede oturuyorum.”

Emre bir pasta alır ve otobüse biner. Bu mahalleye ilk kez gelmektedir.

Geldiğinde bir fırın görür. Fırının yanında gri bir bina vardır.

“Bu, Kerem’in binası olmalı,” diye düşünür.

Emre binaya girer ve ikinci kata çıkar. 6 numaralı daireyi bulur. Kapı biraz açıktır.

“Kerem?” diye seslenir Emre.

Kimse cevap vermez.

Emre kapıyı açar ve içeri girer.

“Merhaba! Ben geldim!” der.

Daire sessizdir. Emre kapının yanında birkaç ayakkabı görür, bu yüzden o da ayakkabılarını çıkarır. Sonra pastayı mutfak masasının üzerine koyar.

“Kerem muhtemelen banyodadır,” diye düşünür.

Emre kanepeye oturur ve etrafına bakar. Oturma odasında pembe yastıklar ve duvarlarda birçok aile fotoğrafı vardır.

“Bu daire çok farklı görünüyor,” der.

Birden küçük beyaz bir köpek odaya koşar ve yüksek sesle havlamaya başlar.

“Merhaba, küçük köpek,” der Emre. “Sen Kerem’in yeni köpeği misin?”

Tam o sırada yaşlı bir kadın yatak odasından çıkar. Emre’yi görür ve çığlık atar.

“Hırsız! Yardım edin!” diye bağırır.

Hemen bir süpürge alır ve onu önünde tutar.

“Evimden çık!” der.

Emre kanepeden hızla kalkar.

“Hayır, hayır! Lütfen bana vurmayın!” der. “Ben hırsız değilim!”

Kadın süpürgeyle Emre’ye doğru yaklaşır.

“O zaman sen kimsin?” diye sorar.

“Ben Emre’yim. Kerem’in arkadaşıyım. O, 6 numaralı dairede oturuyor.”

“Burada Kerem diye biri yok!” der kadın.

Emre kapıyı gösterir.

“Ama burası 6 numaralı daire.”

“Evet, öyle,” diye cevap verir kadın. “Ama sen yanlış binadasın!”

Emre pencereden dışarı bakar. Sokağın karşısında başka bir fırın ve başka bir gri bina görür.

Hatasını anlar.

“Eyvah,” der. “Çok özür dilerim. Binalar birbirine benziyor.”

Kadın masanın üzerindeki pastaya bakar.

“Televizyonumu çalmak için pasta mı getirdin?” diye sorar.

Emre gergin bir şekilde gülmeye başlar.

“Hayır. Pasta Kerem için.”

Kadın süpürgeyi indirir ve o da gülmeye başlar.

Emre hızlıca pastasını alır, ayakkabılarını giyer ve daireden çıkar.

Birkaç dakika sonra doğru binayı bulur. Kerem dışarıda onu beklemektedir.

“Neredeydin?” diye sorar Kerem.

Emre pastaya bakar ve şöyle der:

“Az önce süpürgeli yaşlı bir kadın tarafından neredeyse saldırıya uğruyordum.”

Kerem şaşkın görünür.

Emre gülümser.

“Uzun hikâye.”
