I Lost My Job

Mert is 26 years old. He lives in Istanbul and works for a technology company. He is an operations specialist.

This is his first full-time job. He started working at the company three years ago, when he was 23. He knows the office, his team, and his job very well.

He usually starts work at nine o’clock. Every morning, he makes coffee, opens his computer, and checks his emails.

Mert likes his job. He works with a small team, and he likes his coworkers. Sometimes the job is busy, but he enjoys working there.

One Monday morning, Mert comes to the office as usual. He sits at his desk and starts working.

At ten o’clock, he gets a message from his manager.

“Hi Mert. Can you come to my office, please?”

Mert looks at the message.

“Of course,” he writes.

He feels a little nervous. He does not know why his manager wants to see him.

Mert goes to the manager’s office and knocks on the door.

“Come in,” his manager says.

Mert sits down.

His manager looks serious.

“Mert, I have some bad news,” she says. “The company is changing. We need a smaller team.”

Mert does not say anything for a few seconds.

“What do you mean?” he asks.

“I’m sorry, but today is your last day with the company.”

Mert is shocked.

“Is there a problem with my work?” he asks.

“No,” his manager says. “You do good work. This is not about your performance. The company is cutting jobs.”

Mert feels sad and worried.

He goes back to his desk. He tells his coworkers what happened.

“I’m really sorry,” his friend Can says.

“Thank you,” Mert says. “I still can’t believe it.”

Mert puts his notebook, headphones, and coffee cup into his bag. Then he says goodbye to his team.

When he gets home, he sits on the sofa.

“What am I going to do now?” he thinks.

He feels bad, but he knows he needs a new plan.

The next morning, Mert gets up early. He makes breakfast and opens his laptop.

First, he updates his CV. Then he looks at job websites.

He finds three interesting jobs at technology companies.

“This one looks good,” he says.

He sends his CV and applies for all three jobs.

For the next few days, Mert checks his phone and email many times.

On Friday afternoon, his phone rings.

“Hello, is this Mert?”

“Yes, speaking.”

“Hi, I’m calling from NovaTech. We received your CV. We would like to invite you for a job interview.”

Mert smiles.

“Yes, of course. Thank you very much.”

After the call, he feels much better.

He does not have a new job yet, but now he has hope.

Sometimes one door closes, and another door opens.
